LORRAINE HANSBERRY
Today in 1959, Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin In the Sun opened at Barrymore Theater, New York. This was the first play by a Black woman to premiere on Broadway.
The title refers to the poem Harlem by Langston Hughes
Harlem BY LANGSTON HUGHES What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? Langston Hughes, "Harlem" from The Collected Works of Langston Hughes.
